Bates is the son of rich parents. He's home-schooled and easily bored, which makes him a bit of a cantankerous little bugger.	Socrates is Bates' dead best friend. He died somewhere in the 40s and it took dying to make him appreciate life.	Peony is the gardener's daughter. She lives on the grounds, and does her best to stay happy and positive despite Bates' presence.
